How it came to be
Words give the meaning; the simplified form swapped the old sound part for the sign for above, which sounds the same in Wu dialects.
用法
- A causative "let/make/have (someone do)": 让我看看 (ràng wǒ kànkan) let me have a look, 老师让我们读 (lǎoshī ràng wǒmen dú) the teacher had us read.
- Also "to yield/give way": 让步 (ràngbù) make a concession, 让座 (ràng zuò) give up one's seat. In passive-flavored speech 让 can introduce the doer like 被: 让雨淋了 (ràng yǔ lín le) got caught in the rain.
