The oldest form is a picture of a snake; the character was later borrowed for a pronoun.

- The third-person pronoun for things and animals, 'it': 它很可爱 (tā hěn kě'ài) it's cute, plural 它们 (tāmen) they/them (for objects).
- Homophone of 他/她 (tā, he/she) but written with the 宀 top for non-persons; Chinese uses 它 far less than English uses 'it' and often just drops the object pronoun.
