The ear gives the meaning and the two people above it the sound; the word first meant someone born deaf.
用法
- Two senses: to rise up tall: 高耸 (gāosǒng) to tower, 耸立 (sǒnglì) to stand loftily; and to raise/shrug: 耸肩 (sǒng jiān) to shrug the shoulders.
- Also "to alarm" in 耸人听闻 (sǒngrén-tīngwén) sensational, deliberately shocking: a common set phrase for exaggerated news.
