The oldest form draws sugarcane with dots around it over an open mouth; the shape was later borrowed for other words.
用法
- Suffix turning a verb/role into "the one who": 作者 (zuòzhě) author, 记者 (jìzhě) reporter, 读者 (dúzhě) reader, 消费者 (xiāofèizhě) consumer. Written register.
- 或者 (huòzhě) = "or" in statements: distinct from 还是 (háishi), which is "or" in questions. 咖啡或者茶 (kāfēi huòzhě chá) coffee or tea.
- 前者/后者 (qiánzhě/hòuzhě) = the former/the latter, a formal-writing pairing.
