How it came to be
形声 · Meaning + sound
One part gives the meaning, the other gives the sound.
The small seal form shows a building with a sound part under its roof; both parts later changed into today's shape.
用法
- Bound morpheme for scolding or rejecting: 训斥 (xùnchì) to reprimand, 斥责 (chìzé) to denounce.
- In 排斥 (páichì) to repel/exclude and 充斥 (chōngchì) to be flooded/rife with, it carries a negative flavor: 市场上充斥着假货 (shìchǎng shàng chōngchìzhe jiǎhuò) the market is flooded with fakes.
