How it came to be

A sign that points at an idea, often a mark added to a simple drawing.
The oldest form is a short line above a long curve, pointing to the place above.
用法
- 'On / up', and 'attend / go to': 桌子上 (zhuōzi shàng) on the table, 上课 (shàngkè) have class, 上班 (shàngbān) go to work. On a verb: 关上 (guānshàng) close up.
- For time/sequence it means 'previous': 上午 (shàngwǔ) morning, 上个月 (shàng ge yuè) last month.
- 上网 (shàngwǎng) means to go online: 上 as 'get onto'.
